GE taps Zucker to run NBC Universal
General Electric Co. promoted Jeff Zucker to president and chief executive officer of NBC Universal Inc., charging him with reviving revenue growth at its television and movie studios and increasing sales from the Internet.

Zucker, 41, takes over immediately, GE said Tuesday. He replaces Bob Wright, who expanded the division in television, movies and theme parks over the past two decades. Wright, 63, will remain a GE vice chairman through this year and assist with the transition.

Universal Orlando Resort kicked off its "Do the Extraordinary"-themed, 2007 advertising campaign Monday with two commercials airing nationally on 25 cable TV networks. They're aimed at convincing viewers that Universal is much more than amusement park attractions.

Universal's president to retire
Bob Gault, who led Universal Orlando through tough tourism times following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, then a couple of boom years, then another slide, is retiring as the theme park resort's president Dec. 5. Bill Davis, a former SeaWorld of Florida general manager, will replace him, becoming the next chief operating officer of Universal's resort with two of the world's largest theme parks, Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure, the CityWalk entertainment district and three resort hotels.

Universal Orlando is trying another ticket discount plan in the increasingly dynamic and competitive market of tourists' theme park packages, Universal Tuesday announced a new seven-day, two-park ticket deal for $85, for people who buy at least one day in advance either over the Internet or through participating agents such as AAA. A basic one-day, one-park ticket costs $67.

Halloween Horror Nights ranked third by industry magazine - Orlando Business Journal
"Haunted House" magazine has ranked its 13 best individual haunted houses and its top five amusement park haunted events for 2006. Third on the list of amusement park events is Universal Orlando's 16th annual Halloween Horror Nights. The event runs for 19 nights, after regular park hours, from Sept. 29-Oct. 31. This year's theme features the return of several of the characters associated with previous events.

End is near for Back to Future
The future of the Back to the Future ride is short at Universal Studios. After months of not commenting on rumors of the attraction's demise, Universal Orlando on Wednesday confirmed that the 16-year-old simulator ride will be closing to make room for an as-yet-undisclosed new attraction. Universal spokesman Tom Schroder would not give a date for the ride's last run, though employees at Universal said they have been told it would close Oct. 1.

Horror's helpers
Start with about 1,000 actors, then ponder their roles, and you might get a sense of what Universal Orlando's makeup and prosthetics shop has to deal with every fall. They need wigs, fake teeth, masks and makeup jobs by the hundreds, and many of them are not reusable from one night to the next. A few need fake arms and legs. A couple of actors even get fake abdomens, so that their bodies can be cut open, exposing organs.

Theme-park fire sends worker to hospital - Orlando Sentinel
A worker at Universal Studios in Orlando was taken to a hospital Sunday night for treatment of smoke inhalation after extinguishing a small fire on a catwalk above a soundstage. Wrestling matches were occurring at the time. The fire started about 8:15 p.m. when a burlap sandbag, used as ballast, was ignited by a hot light, Orlando Fire Department Assistant Chief Skip Kerkhof said.

Universal raises price to $67
On the heels of Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando increased its basic, one-day, one-park adult ticket price to $67, starting today. Universal on Friday announced a host of ticket price changes, keeping most of its prices in line with Disney's, which went up Sunday. Previously, Universal's one-day ticket cost $63. Universal runs two theme parks, Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure.

The Back to the Future ride at Universal Studios is closing -- perhaps as soon as next month -- to make way for a new attraction, sources tell me. No comment from Universal, but speculation on some unofficial Web sites indicates a new storyline and ride vehicles could be based on The Simpsons cartoon or The Fast and the Furious car-racing movies.

Filmmaker Landis Lends Talents to Theme Park - Back Stage
Director John Landis has collaborated with Universal Studios theme park in Orlando to develop a special effects show featuring memorable movie moments. The show, Universal 360 — A Cinesphere Spectacular, combines scenes from more than 100 movies and projects them onto four Kevlar spheres on the theme parks central lagoon. The show will also include lasers, pyrotechnics, and digital mapping technology (which will make the surrounding areas appear to be engulfed in flames). The 30-foot tall spheres will serve as giant projection screens, capturing 360 degrees of imagery.

4-year-old hurt at theme park - Orlando Sentinel
A 4-year-old girl was injured Monday as she was getting off a roller coaster at Universal Studios. The girl, who was not identified, was taken to Orlando Regional Sand Lake Hospital after the 6 p.m. incident for treatment of cuts on her foot, park spokesman Tom Schroder said. The girl and her family were getting off Woody Woodpecker's Nuthouse Coaster, in the Woody Woodpecker's KidZone section of the park, after the ride had stopped. Her foot became lodged in a 21/2- to 3-inch gap between the coaster and the platform, Schroder said.

Universal becomes highest-paying area theme park - Orlando Sentinel
Universal Orlando has upped the ante in the local battle for theme park employees, increasing the minimum hourly wage to $7.25, just as the summer hiring season begins. That follows SeaWorld, which increased its minimum wage to $7 an hour in March in preparation for the spring break hiring season. Walt Disney World raised its minimum wage to $6.90 last fall.
