Darien Lake ending its season early
he state's largest theme park said it will end its summer season four weeks early this year as its corporate parent continues to suffer financial problems. Six Flags Darien Lake, located halfway between Rochester and Buffalo, is one of six properties being considered for sale by parent company Six Flags Inc. because of financial losses. As of July 31, the park had already reduced operating hours five out of seven days and closed two rides, including a major roller coaster. The new closing date is Oct. 1.

He'll drive new car after riding coaster — 395 times
Thomas Welsher has had enough of the Viper at Six Flags Darien Lake for a while. The 23-year-old Webster resident outlasted the competition and won a two-year lease on a 2006 Suzuki Reno by riding the roller coaster at the Genesee County amusement park 395 times — that's more than 230 miles — in less than three days. The contest started with eight competitors at 10:30 a.m. Friday. Every three hours they got a 20-minute break and could get off the coaster.

The thrills will continue at Six Flags Darien Lake. Corporate executives with Six Flags told news 10nbc the theme park in Genesee County will not close. It currently employs 90 people full time and 2,500 in the summer months. Reports Friday said financial problems could force Six Flags to sell or even close six of its 30 properties across the country. The company sites lower park attendance and rising costs for the problems. Six Flags president said the attendance drop was expected because the company is no longer deeply discounting season passes. It has been targeting families as consumers, rather than teenagers.
