Cypress Gardens, a 70-year-old central Florida theme park in bankruptcy proceedings, has announced the addition of a historic roller coaster and a new play area to increase its appeal as a family destination. According to the Tampa Tribune, the kids area will be called Bugsville and will feature 13 rides. The park is also adding the historic Starliner, a 43-year-old wooden roller coaster that was once the main attraction at the now-defunct Miracle Strip amusement park on Panama City Beach.

Cypress Gardens Adventure Park may have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, but locals haven't lost confidence in the reborn park or its savior. The park filed for Chapter 11 protection from creditors in Georgia federal court, listing more than $50 million in debts, forced mainly from unpaid insurance claims from the trio of hurricanes that passed through in 2004, park officials said. "This is not a surprise," said Winter Haven Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Bob Gernert. "We knew it [the insurance claim] was causing serious concern."

Less than two years after bringing back the water skiers, roller coasters and Southern belles, Cypress Gardens Adventure Park is in bankruptcy court. Hurricanes Charley, Frances and Jeanne are getting the blame for throwing the 70-year-old attraction into Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings. Adventure Parks Group LLC of Valdosta, Ga., the company that owns Cypress Gardens in Winter Haven and Wild Adventures in Valdosta, said Tuesday that it will keep the parks open and honor season passes while reorganizing its finances.
