Six Flags Offers Chance As Animal Trainer For Day - CBS5Animal aficionados over age 12 who have $400 can now live out the fantasy of being an animal trainer for a day, according to officials at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo.
"If you've ever wondered what it would be like to work closely with a group of extraordinary animals, this program is for you," Martin Lathrop, park president of Six Flags Discovery Kingdom said.
"There is a trust and respect between animal and trainer that is clearly evident in every aspect of their relationship, and when you have the opportunity to experience that closeness yourself, it is truly unforgettable. This is perfect for anyone who loves animals or for anyone who hopes to one day pursue their own future career as a trainer."
The 135-acre park boasts a new thematic emphasis on land, sea, and sky, according to Six Flags. The trainer for a day program is divided into two parts where trainers will have the chance to experience both realms, working with both dolphin and elephant trainers.
"On the dolphin side, when we're preparing their meals, it's not just a matter of choosing a few fish - the fish they eat are restaurant-quality," said Becky Tagg, a Six Flags Discovery Kingdom dolphin trainer. "The most fun for guests is the chance to get in waist deep water with the dolphins and give the dolphins signals - the next thing you know, you've just signaled a dolphin to jump 10 feet out of the water! They've also been known to give kisses and handshakes, so it's quite a treat."
In addition to this hands-on work, Six Flags will reportedly provide guest trainers with animal education and husbandry training from knowledge of veterinary facts and preventative care to facts about animal behavior.
"We developed this program to provide a unique experience for our guests and to really communicate what is so special about the diverse collection of animals we have here at the park," said Lathrop. "Six Flags Discovery Kingdom is just what its name implies - a place for discovery and adventure, a place where people can come to develop an appreciation for wildlife and in this case, be a real part of the action."
