X-treme headache for Six Flags Magic Mountain
It twists and spins and hurdles its riders, but all those thrills come at a cost.

For riders, experiencing X can mean more than four hours in line. For Magic Mountain at Six Flags California, the ride's complexity has meant cost overruns, legal battles and engineering nightmares as wild as the head-over-heels roller coaster.

In a high-stakes competition over which of the world's parks has the most thrilling coasters, Magic Mountain's experience with X shows the pitfalls of relying on the latest in coaster technology.

"It was supposed to be the nuke bomb in the coaster war," said Robert Niles, the Pasadena-based editor of ThemeParkInsider.com. "The specs on the ride were just audacious. It switched the war from being who could build the tallest, fastest coaster to who can create the most intense experience."

But X, which was supposed to cost $6.6 million, ended up costing more than $17 million, according to court documents. And technical kinks are still being worked out, five years after it opened.

Six Flags sells seven theme parks - Salt Lake Tribune
Theme-park operator Six Flags Inc. sold seven of its 30 North American parks for $312 million. Jacksonville, Fla., park operator PARC 7F-Operations Corp bought the parks, but plans to sell them to Orlando-based real-estate trust CNL Income Properties. That company will then lease the parks back to PARC, which is expected to operate them. The seven parks are Six Flags Darien Lake near Buffalo; Six Flags Elitch Gardens in Denver; Frontier City and the White Water Bay water park in Oklahoma City; SplashTown in Houston; Waterworld USA in Concord, Calif.; and Wild Waves and Enchanted Village in Seattle. The sales are expected to close in March and help Six Flags, which has struggled with falling attendance and a large debt load. While Darien Lake and Elitch Gardens will no longer carry the Six Flags brand under the new ownership, The Associated Press reports any 2007 season passes will continue to be honored at all Six Flags branded parks.

Six Flags CEO waves the signal flag for families - USA Today
Six Flags CEO Mark Shapiro is charged with revitalizing an ailing regional theme park chain that has posted an annual loss since 1998 and earned a reputation as a rundown hangout for packs of teens. "Every day we find something wrong with this company," he says. "It's a total fix-up." The 36-year-old former ESPN executive is driving a massive Six Flags makeover that aims to raise attendance and spending in its key summer period: More than 85% of revenue comes in the second and third quarters, the bulk of it in June, July and August.

Six Flags, Disneyfied - Motley Fool
In a telltale sign during my meeting with Six Flags (NYSE: SIX) President and CEO Mark Shapiro at Six Flags Great Adventure last week, I let the D-word slip. When he was describing an emphasis on future attractions that the whole family can enjoy together, I asked if that was the Disney (NYSE: DIS) mindset kicking in, and then I quickly tacked on a "no offense" in case it came out the wrong way. "No offense at all," Shapiro countered. "We should be so lucky."

Take five breaths, then yell!
BEARDED and with brightly colored tattoos on both his calves, Jon Shiner looks tough, but he admits he has struggled with heights his whole life. "If I have to stand on a chair I get nervous, so anything up in the air pretty much freaks me out," the 29-year-old said. But on a recent Saturday morning, Shiner decided to face his phobia when he attended a free class at Six Flags Magic Mountain on conquering the fear of riding roller coasters. The amusement park was hosting the course in conjunction with its promotion of Tatsu, a new dragon-themed coaster that officially begins running Saturday.

Tatsu Towers Above SCV
At 170 feet in the air, you can see pretty far. On a clear day it would even be possible to point out various parts of the Santa Clarita Valley that are miles away. However, by the time the 32-passenger train of Magic Mountain’s new roller coaster reaches the top of its initial 170-foot ascent, there is no time to take in the scenery. Designed to position the rider in a “horizontal to earth” flying position — bodies held in place by shoulder harnesses, feet trailing behind — the train pauses for barely a millisecond before plunging 111 feet and on into a series of loops, spins and rolls designed to top any roller coaster experience in the world.

Its landmark orange tower has stood guard over Los Angeles' northern gateway for nearly 35 years, a beacon of fun and commerce for generations of thrill seekers. Though visitors see few traces of Six Flags California's Magic Mountain's 35th anniversary - it's eclipsed by parent Six Flags Inc.'s 45th birthday celebration - the air still buzzed as screaming patrons zipped though any of its 16 white-knuckle coasters.
