SYLVAN BEACH - Village residents argued with board trustees Monday night to ensure an upcoming public hearing will be held when residents can attend.

Mayor Thomas G. Statkewicz said the hearing will cover the topic of issuing another short-term reversible license to the Sylvan Beach Amusement Park that will allow it to operate on part of the Village Park. It would be renewed every week.

The license would let the park place three children's rides between the existing kiddy ride area and the new miniature golf course, with the stipulation that the village could revoke the license at any time if it were "not satisfied" with the way the park was running the children's ride area.

Janice Krueger and Sally Farrow both cited concern with the board's initial decision to have a public hearing after a 3 p.m. Monday work session. Farrow argued that having it that early would mean residents couldn't attend because they would still be at work and that the meeting should be later in the evening, around 6 or 7 p.m., to allow for travel time from their jobs.

After several revised dates and times, the board finally decided on Tuesday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. for the public hearing.

During the meeting, members of the board also discussed establishing a memorial park in the village park where people could purchase bricks to honor a loved one or a friend.

"What we've come up with is the idea of a little memorial park that surrounds a fountain," Statkewicz said. It would be near the playground, he added, so that parents could relax on benches in the area and watch their children play.

The village will make a decision on the park after researching prices for a fountain.

A farmer's market was also discussed. Board members decided having it on a Monday would be acceptable, but were still working out where it would go and will make a decision at a later time.

"I think it's a good idea," the mayor said.

The public hearing to discuss the license for the amusement park to use the Village Park is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. at the Village Municipal Building.
