Decision on examining ride cable delayed

A decision has been postponed on how to handle the examination of the broken cable from the ride at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom that severed the feet of a 13-year-old Louisville girl, state officials say.

As part of a lawsuit against the theme park, the parents of Kaitlyn Lasitter obtained an injunction to stop the park from altering or destroying the Superman Tower of Power ride or the cable.

The cable has been locked away at the park by the state Department of Agriculture, which is handling the investigation, said Bill Clary, a department spokesman. Before the injunction was issued, the state had awarded a contract to an independent laboratory in Cincinnati to do the testing, Clary said.

Jefferson Circuit Judge Barry Willett ruled at the end of last month that lawyers for the state department, the theme park and the Lasitter family had until Thursday to agree on what tests will be done on the cable and which company to do them.

The parties also must agree on how to pay for the testing if it costs more than the original state contract, Clary said.

The date by which the agreement must be reached has been moved to Sept. 7, according to court records. The date was changed to allow more time to gather information, Clary said.
