RYE, N.Y. (AP) _ A Westchester County amusement park ride may be closed down for good following the death of a 21-year-old employee last month, a newspaper reported Sunday.

Westchester County officials shut down the Mind Scrambler after the June 29 death of Playland Amusement Park employee Gabriela Garin, who got into the ride and was thrown from it, even though she was supposed to be on duty, the Journal News reported in Sunday's editions.

"We have already shut down the ride and, right now, we're discussing whether it will ever reopen," said Susan Tolchin, a spokeswoman for county executive Andrew Spano. "The thought now is that it won't."

Garin's death was the third since 2004 at the county-owned park, raising concerns about safety measures at the establishment.

The state Department of Labor, which oversees New York amusement rides and inspects them and is conducting an investigation into Garin's death, was also reviewing whether the ride could ever be re-opened.

Tolchin said the ride would remain closed the rest of the summer season.

Three private companies operate a total of nine of the 50 rides at Parkland. Garin worked for S&L Amusements, which operates the Mind Scrambler.

Anthony Provenzano, an attorney representing the ride's owner, declined to comment on the possibility that the ride could be closed indefinitely, the Journal News reported.
