Historic Conneaut Lake Park needs $300,000, or the 115-year-old amusement park won't open this year, an official said Thursday.

Conneaut Lake Park officials had banked on a plan to sell more than 3 acres for $1.7 million to a developer to build condominiums. But a Crawford County judge, who oversees the park, this week rejected the idea, saying because the park is held in a public trust, land can't be simply sold to help pay debts.

The park can't borrow any money because it still owes money for startup loans from three previous seasons, operations director George Deshner.

"What we need is a benefactor," Deshner said. "Or, we need six benefactors willing to give us $50,000 each."

The park, the 12th-oldest in the nation, usually opens on Memorial Day weekend. It is operating with a skeleton crew of five as park officials hope for an infusion of cash, Deshner said.

The park is located about 95 miles north of Pittsburgh.
