As one of the most family oriented amusement parks in Western New York, Martin’s Fantasy Island will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year.

Through years of both growth and decline, the amusement has seen great improvements over the past decade due to the hard work and dedication of its owner, Martin DiPietro.

“Marty has been in the business for decades so he knows what people want to experience at an amusement park,” said Ray Wigle, marketing and public relations coordinator for Martin’s Fantasy Island. “He has focused on the goal of ensuring safety and cleanliness here at the park and so far, he’s done just that.”

In celebration of the 50th anniversary, park officials are bringing in a replica of the 1975 ‘Devil’s Hole’ attraction. Although the ride will not be identical to its original version, the functions of the ride will be the same and are intended to recreate the memory of the original attraction.

“Marty located the statue that stood in front of the ride for many years and had it restored. That will be in place for customers to see as well,” Wigle said.

Martin’s Fantasy Island will soon be home to one of five existing models of the new ride, the ‘Mind Warp,’ and will be the first amusement park in the United States and Canada to offer this attraction.

The ride spins thrill seekers on individual carts forward and backward while the entire contraption spins in circles as well. Officials are very excited for the arrival of the new ride.

DiPietro and his staff have been hard at work restoring many of the old favorites in order to enhance the effect of a 50-year accomplishment and emphasize the excitement from years before and the new excitement that the park brings today.

With the guidance of Rosa Patten, DiPietro was able to properly restore the ‘Blue Goose’ carousel with the original wooden birds that were used for the ride.

In addition, the horse-drawn carriage that pulled young princes’ and princesses’ through the park and around the castle creating a magical memory for children is currently being restored and will be available for free rides during the July 9 celebration at the park.

“We want to focus on the favorite parts of the amusement park that everyone loves but still bring in new and exciting attractions,” Wigle said.

Martin’s Fantasy Island will open May 14 and encourages the public to come celebrate the anniversary season with the family and friends.
