New York is doing a make-over. Coney Island is getting two new Roller coasters. They will be replacing ones that are over 80 years old. The city is citing ramshackle conditions of some older roller coasters, that are beyond repair. New York will be spending $150 million on the Coney Island improvements.

The new Coney Island roller coasters are called The Soarin' Eagle and Steeplechase, both in the Scream Zone section of the theme park.

"Last summer was Coney Island's biggest in nearly a half century, and this year -- with the addition of the first new roller coasters since the Cyclone opened in 1927 -- it's going to be even bigger," New York City Mayor Bloomberg said at Wednesday's opening ceremony. "It had been decades since Coney Island saw any significant investment and the famed amusement district had dwindled as a result."

In 2009 New York bought three parcels of land totaling 6.9 acres to add to Coney Island's theme park.  The area includes roller coasters, historic attractions, hotels and retail stores.  A ten-year lease was signed with Central Amusement International, a company that helps build new theme parks.

New York is hoping the improvements to Coney Island and the added roller coasters will help bring locals and tourists every year.  The investment will also create 6,000 permanent jobs and $14 billion of economic activity in New York over the next thirty years.

These improvements can help Coney Island have a new reputation of charm while adding improvements like thrilling roller coasters to bring in young and old alike.
