The larger and faster New Texas Giant roller coaster will open April 22 at Six Flags Over Texas.  The Arlington theme park — which celebrated the start of its 50th season over the weekend — announced the date Tuesday via Facebook .

The original Giant, which held the title of the world’s tallest wooden coaster, closed in November 2009 and was partially demolished and then rebuilt.

The $10 million redo will give the coaster a smoother ride and slightly faster top speed of 65 mph. It will also feature the wooden coaster record for the world’s steepest drop, at 79 degrees, and three turns sharper than 90 degrees. The new ride includes about 4,700 feet of new track.

The reconstruction cost is nearly double the initial $5.5 million price of the Giant, which opened in 1990. Some of the original structure was incorporated into the new ride, but most of the coaster is a newly built steel and wood hybrid.
