STEEL PIER WINDMILL PROJECT MOVING FORWARD

Steel Pier President Anthony Catanoso showed NCB40 the location of what he hopes will be a new attraction set to debut this fall.

"We would be the first amusement park in the county to have a wind turbine, first pier to have a wind turbine so there's a lot of firsts here," said Catanoso.

The park is hoping to harness some of the sea breeze by installing a total of three windmills on Steel Pier itself. One turbine alone would help power nearly 50% of the park. When its all said and done windmills will generate close to 200,000-kilowatt hours a year. In the long run Steel Pier may even turn that power into a profit.

"With three turbines up turning 12 months a year we could even down the road see a profit," said Catanoso.

"It shows that there's an environmental awareness that people in this country are developing more and more. I think they see something like that they are going to be more inclined to visit a community that supports green technology," said State Senator Jim Whelan, (D), 2nd District.

Earlier this month Governor Christie signed legislation, sponsored by Whelan, which would allow Steel Pier along with other areas to build windmills.

"So now it's available for any town or community that wants to do it," said Whelan.

Representatives with Steel Pier say they should have their plans for their new windmill project submitted to the Department of Environmental Protection by the end of this week. Project images should be drawn up shortly. However, those at Steel Pier already know the nearly 150 foot windmills will fit in nicely with the park's landscape, and the plan for Atlantic City.

"I think it's going to fit well. The whole tourism district with us right in the center of it and being the largest family entertainment venue here I think it all plays a part and we're happy to do new and exciting things," said Catanoso.

Steel Pier is closed for the season but is set to open in April. Morey's Piers in Wildwood say they are doing some research and looking into a windmill project of their own.
