Quassy Amusement Park Goes Smoke-Free, Sets Student Art Competition

Press Release

January 07, 2011

Quassy Amusement Park is clearing the air this year by creating a “smoke-free” environment within the facility, park officials announced today.

“The time had certainly come for us to enact a no smoking policy,” Quassy owner Eric Anderson said. “It was an easy decision for us to make based on recent feedback from our guests.”

While smoking in park structures such as the restaurant and arcade has been prohibited for years, Quassy will now enforce a “smoke-free” environment throughout all areas of the park readily accessible to the general public.

“It’s definitely the right decision, and for a lot of good reasons,” added owner George Frantzis II. “Most importantly it addresses the concerns about smoking in a facility which is geared toward families with young children.”

Quassy will set aside an area away from the general flow of pedestrian traffic as the single public smoking area on the property.

“We carefully took into consideration the needs of our guests in the design of our plan,” Frantzis continued.

‘Tobacco Free Day’

To bolster the initiative, Quassy will be hosting a “Tobacco Free Day” on Sunday, May 15 in conjunction with its annual “Art In The Park” sidewalk art competition for students. The theme for this year’s competition is: Quassy Goes Smoke-Free. Students will be encouraged to incorporate anti-tobacco slogans in their sidewalk artwork.

Details and registration forms for student teams – elementary through high school – are available on the Press Room page at Quassy dot com. There is no fee for schools to participate.

As an additional incentive, Connecticut’s Education Connection has been awarded a generous grant from the Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) for an innovative tobacco use prevention program in the Danbury and New Britain Public School Districts.

This two-year initiative, called KidsCAN Avoid Tobacco (KidsCAN), is a novel and engaging approach to tobacco use prevention in youth ages 5-14.

The primary goals of KidsCAN are to prevent initiation of tobacco use in youth, promote access to cessation programs, and promote the elimination of exposure to second-hand smoke.

As part of this two-year initiative, Education Connection will implement dynamic tobacco use prevention enhancements in these two communities through the arts, language arts, physical education, after school clubs, parent and community programs.

Quassy’s 103rd Season

Quassy Amusement Park will celebrate its 103rd season of operation in 2011. The park will also introduce its new marquee attraction this year: the “Wooden Warrior” roller coaster.

Under construction since last summer, the wooden coaster features more than 1,200 feet of diving and twisting track. To add to the excitement, there is a tunneled turnaround before the state-of-the-art coaster train returns to the station.

The “Wooden Warrior” was designed by The Gravity Group of Cincinnati, Ohio, and is the first “junior family” ride created by the firm. The ride will drop nearly 40 feet and reach speeds of up to 35 mph along its course.

Quassy has more than two-dozen rides and attractions, including “Saturation Station,” the popular interactive family water play area. There is also a beach, restaurant, redemption arcade, games and entertainment.
