January 08, 2007 Steel Pier has been as much a part of Atlantic City's storied history as the grand old Boardwalk hotels, the Miss America Pageant and the Monopoly board game.
Oops! The hotels were blown up years ago to make room for the casinos, Miss America skipped town in 2005 for Las Vegas and the newest version of Monopoly has left Atlantic City out of the game.
It appeared the 109-year-old Steel Pier also would vanish into the past when Donald Trump's casino company announced last year it would demolish the amusement site to build a luxury condominium project.
However, the “Pier is closed” sign that is attached to a gate blocking the entryway will be removed this spring, allowing hundreds of thousands of children to stream in for the assortment of kiddie rides and old-fashioned, carnival-style amusements. A grand opening is scheduled for April 1, Palm Sunday weekend.
“The lights, rides and attractions will again be a beacon of family entertainment in Atlantic City in 2007,” said Tony Catanoso, president of Atlantic Pier Amusements Inc., Steel Pier's operator.
