July 24, 2006 Brenda Simmons, Middlesex County Executive Director for the Red Cross, was all smiles on Friday she realized that Mal Chapman had handed her a way to make 200 people's days a little brighter.
Chapman is the owner of Phoenix Barge, the company that was hired by Quassy Amusement Park to build two barges, which are used in the annual 3-D fireworks display and benefit on July 4.
According to Chapman, Quassy still owed him money, but instead of money, Chapman was given tickets to the amusement park in the sum of the money he was owed.
"He gave them to local kids in the area who could not afford to go to the park," Ron Gustafson, Public Relations Director at Quassy Park said. Quassy Park is the only family -owned park in the state and has been since 1937. He said that Chapman's gesture was "small business helping small business."
